Voices of SWOFON on Malabo Declaration

Small-scale Women Farmers Organisation in Nigeria (SWOFON) kicked off the Voices of SWOFON on Malabo Declaration project across four states in Nigeria namely; Enugu, Cross River, Kaduna and Plateau state respectively to demand government action on its commitment to the Malabo Declaration. Successful ascent of SWOFON to the Kilimanjaro Initiative

The Small-scale Women Farmers Organisation in Nigeria SWOFON were exceptional at the just concluded Rural Women Assembly in Arusha between the 14th – 16th of October 2016 tagged the Kilimanjaro Initiative.   Seventeen (17) women farmers from the platform journeyed out of Nigeria on the 12th of October via an Ethiopian Airway flight to Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Part of the entourage included the National President of SWOFON, Sarah Yapwa, Lovelyn Ejim the National Secretary who also doubles as the Chairperson of the Pan African Rural Women Assembly, Grace Osadojo, SWOFON Financial Secretary, Mary Afan, Ex-Officio, Maria Ukangyang, the Cross Rivers Coordinator, Hannatu Soni, Kaduna state Coordinator, Esther Audu, Chinasa Asonye, Amina Jubrin, Dopse Sandy, Halima Apollos and Beatrice Ubeku among other.   The theme for this year’s event was, Women’s Land Right and SWOFON representatives participated in the opening ceremony, cultural displays and group thematic sessions to draft the Charter of Demands to feature issues surrounding Women’s Right to Land. Main pull of the event was the Climb by the women farmers to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro to symbolize the challenges facing women and represents the starting point to disseminate the message throughout Africa.   A Coalition of smallscale women farmers associations and groups under the platform of SWOFON an Initiative of ActionAid Nigeria converged in Kaduna and Bauchi states respectively for its North-West/North-East Regional Fora in their numbers representing various states in the two geo-political zones to include: Kastina, Kano, Kebbi, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kaduna, Adamawa, Gombe, Borno, Taraba and Bauchi states. The aim was to equip them with the relevant information; tools and resources to engage the Duty-bearers at all levels and get that which they are entitled. The event kicked off in Kaduna with two days of activity lined up. Day one saw Ms. Constance Okeke, International Manager, Public Finance for Agriculture ActionAid International facilitating the session on Network and Coalition building and Azubike Nwokoye, Programme Advisor ActionAid Nigeria taking the particpants through skills and strategies in Policy Advocacy. While the second day presented a one on one interactive session between the Rights holders and Duty bearers. Amongst the government officials in attendence in Kaduna were Mrs Vasti Shamaki Head of Unit Horticulture Ministry Agriculture Kaduna state, Mr Vincent Ahamin, Bank of Agriculture and Mrs Esther A. October 20th 2016 The SWOFON Executive and staff led by Sarah Yapwa the National President paid a visit to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development at FCDA Complex and met with Dr. Shehu Ahmad, the Permanent Secretary. SWOFON South South and South West Regional Forum

The Small-scale Women Farmers Organisation in Nigeria (SWOFON) in partnership with ActionAid Nigeria held its South-South regional forum in Calabar, Cross River State on the 11th and 12th of August and South-West forum in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State on the 15th and 16th of August 2016.
